Juba - Achol Ajak, a 35-year-old resident of Bor is grateful that her family is now vaccinated and protected from cholera. Ajak stated that she was one of the first individuals to receive the cholera vaccine on the inaugural day of the cholera vaccination campaign launch in Bor South County, South Sudan.

“We feel safer now, the threat of cholera has diminished. My family and I are deeply grateful for the care we have received and extend our thank the health workers for their dedication to our community.” said Ajak

Juba: South Sudan has launched an ambitious nationwide campaign that aims to vaccinate an impressive 3.47 million children aged 0 to 59 months against polio, utilizing the innovative Oral Polio Vaccine type 2 (nOPV2).

Juba, 7 February 2025—Today the Ministry of Health has declared a mpox outbreak in Juba, Central Equatoria State. This declaration follows a confirmation mpox Case by the National Public Health Laboratory on 6 February 2025.

The WHO Country Office has achieved a significant milestone by successfully training 28 formally appointed Preventing and Responding to Sexual Exploitation, Abuse, and Harassment (PRSEAH) focal points from the Ministry of Health (MoH) at the national and state levels. This initiative has expanded the network of dedicated PRSEAH part-time focal points from WHO and MoH to 55.

Juba ‒ Nyaboth Gai, a 28-year-old resident of Rubkona, county in the north of South Sudan, is grateful to be alive after her family was severely affected by cholera, an infectious disease that can quickly lead to death if it is not detected and treated early. “All four members of my family got infected and I thank God for giving me another chance to live,” she says. “I am grateful for the treatment we have been receiving in the health facility.”

A campaign aimed at vaccinating over 300 000 people against cholera has commenced in the hotspot county of Rubkona, Unity State in a vital step to curb the ongoing outbreak, bringing the total number of counties where the vaccination campaign has been conducted nationwide to four.

Juba, 10 December 2024 – Vaccinations have begun in response to a cholera outbreak in South Sudan.  Since 28 October 2024, a total of 2555 cases and 32 deaths have been reported, about 37% of them children. Some 150 000 people in Renk County are set to receive the life-saving vaccinations, procured and delivered with UN support. Over a million more vaccine doses are on the way to reach people across the country, including in the capital, Juba.

Juba, 30 November 2024—In response to cholera outbreaks in South Sudan, the Ministry of Health, with support from the World Health Organization (WHO) has secured over 282 153 doses of oral cholera vaccine to implement vaccination campaigns in areas identified as cholera transmission hotspots. 

Juba, 11 November 2024: A nationwide campaign aimed at vaccinating 3.3 million children from 0 to 59 months of age against polio launched in South Sudan using the novel Oral Polio Vaccine type 2. 

The campaign led by the Ministry of Health, with the support of the World Health Organization (WHO), UNICEF, and other partners, is in response to the confirmation of 12 cases of circulating variant poliovirus across eight counties in Western Equatoria, Central Equatoria, Upper Nile, and Jonglei States. 

Juba – Health authorities in South Sudan have declared a cholera outbreak in Renk, a county located on the northern border of Sudan and the main point of entry for refugees and returnees fleeing the ongoing armed conflict in that country. A total of 50 suspected cases with six confirmed cases were reported among refugees, returnees and the host community as of 28 October 2024.
